ULM Horn studies with Dr. James Boldin 10-5-2012 - On the road again with KDAQ

Biedenharn Recital Hall on the campus of ULM in Monroe is a medium sized, intimate arts theater with extremely fine acoustic  properties. I had the opportunity to play on the stage this afternoon with James Boldin offering comments from the theatre seats. Doesn't take much blowing to raise the roof there, say on the Siegfried Horn call, and yet the soft solo passages from Tchaikovsky's Symphony 5 are absolutely gorgeous and so strikingly rich and mellow on my Rauch. Have to try the Shostakovich 5 next time for the lower register.

Excerpts haven't always been my favorite form of study for Horn, (I like to play ad libitum from top to bottom registers and could for hours) but recently, I have once again gone back to some basics (which we all do from time to time) to focus on one or two areas. CHOPS! And more CHOPS!

During my drive to Monroe today, I listened to Liszt and Mozart on KDAQ. The Friday regional broadcast today was from a South Arkansas Symphony concert from last January featuring young Colton Peltier, a piano student now at  The Juilliard School of Music and violinist Elisabeth  Bordelon, of Shreveport, violin student of Kermit Poling.  Also on today's program was Wagner's Siefried Idyll, one of my favorite chamber pieces.

Next week, looking forward to my drive to Texarkana for our opening orchestra season concert. On the program - Haydn Symphony No. 93 in D, Beethoven Symphony No. 1 in C, Mozart Clarinet Concerto in A with guest artist Jean-Francois Normand, Mozart Titus Overture and Mozart Marriage of Figaro. Mr. Peltier plays the Grieg Concerto No. 1 with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra on Thursday October 18 at the River Center Theater.

Once again my congratulations to James Boldin for winning the recent SSO audition for Fourth Horn.

Well, DANG, a victim of Collateral Damage AGAIN

Well, dang, I think I am really feeling unappreciated. My name has just been removed  today from the SSO Personnel List (Horn section) for the coming 2012 - 2013 season. Taking a glance at the SSO website musicians'roster a few minutes ago at first I thought its absence was due to several recent auditions and that the winner of my long time Full Time Second Horn position had returned a signed contract, but, perhaps not, as there appear to be other musicians still on the roster who are no longer members of the SSO. They have moved away or resigned or retired recently.

I have enjoyed my summer, my Horn studies and now have re-directed my musicians' blog to focus on a wider range of topics.  I am certainly not retired contrary to anything you may have heard through the grapevine. My orchestral experience is still needed but elsewhere. To those of you who have supported me through out my ordeal, an unfair and unjust termination from the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, I thank all of you.

I am still Collateral Damage

Travelling to ULM with KDAQ and congrats to James Boldin

Friday noon found me travelling to Monroe again sharing my driving time with  KDAQ Public Radio, Shreveport. This past Friday's broadcast was from a fundraiser for River City Repertory Theatre.

My favourite piece was "No More" from Broadway's The Good-bye Girl sung by a friend of my husband's from his dancing days with Ballet Lyrique, more recently re-named the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet, then directed by his sister Marion Rogers Mills. Dina Bennett was one of his dance partners during these years when he was a danseur for the company. Dancing was an avocation for him and he had been dancing since he was a tot. He played the Nutcracker Prince in several of the Company's productions. In fact in his real vocation he owned H. D. Rogers & Sons, foreign automotive service (where our own sons also worked for several years) and he still is the best anywhere around at what he does which is repair classic and antique automobiles including our twin grandsons' Mustangs.

Thank you again, Kermit, for a delightful 1 1/2 hour drive. Not sure if it was just my car speakers, but I would liked to have heard more of the strings.

Horn player James Boldin and I spent this work session studying more excerpts and listening to some of the best horn players in the world on CD and DVD. I love the Siegfried Horn Call and the drama it evokes from the audience as he tries to awaken the dragon which is supposed to introduce him to fear, a feeling he has never known. In addition, the 3rd horn part from Brahms' Academic Overture is a really nasty one, but James can belt it out with gusto. The Tchai 5 1st horn solo in the slow movement is one I can relate to and enjoy playing - I played that same solo as an 8th grader at the Solo and Ensemble Band Festival in Natchitoches decades ago albeit in a different key.

ULM and etc. 14 and 21 September 2012

Wonderful day to spend time driving to and from ULM. And I believe there is a football game on campus this evening which is being televised on one of the ESPN stations. Glad I was able to boogie out of the area a little early this week.

My thanks to Kermit Poling at KDAQ for providing "a little travelling music" for me to enjoy on my trip to Monroe during the lunch hour. Kermit was the guest artist for the final SSO concert of last season playing Samuel Barber's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, one of my very favorite pieces. On this same program was Hanson's Symphony No. 2, a virtual fiesta for Horn players, Bernstein's Overture to Candide and Peck's percussion piece, The Grandeur and the Glory played by Chandler Teague, Anthony Robinson and Douglas Parmelee. Thanks, for the entertainment, guys!

Today James Boldin and I worked with various mutes and then listened to some of the Bach Mass in b minor, rather the 10th section "Quonium" (bassaria) of 24 sections , the one part in the entire Mass which Bach wrote to include the Horn in the instrumentation. Heard three or four versions, one of which I enjoyed more than the others. Natural Horn sound best to me, but a valved horn version was decent as well. Yep, you guessed it. I am now working on that piece together with my trusty Lawson. Sorry, no Corno da Caccia. No descant horn either. Stay with me, mouthpiece. Exciting stuff.
